May 18 | Sonido Isleno Group
Sonido Isleño Celebrates 15th Anniversary!
When asked to label Sonido Isleñoʼs music, critics and fans agree that it is Latin Jazz in the truest sense of the term: Sonido Isleño explores different ways of mixing Jazz and Spanish-Caribbean music, while making the music accessible, organic, and logical. This
is the direct result of the New York musicians involved, who are completely bi-cultural, a benefit of being residents of the largest Caribbean city in the United States. Active since 1996, Sonido Isleño is the brainchild of Dr. Benjamin Lapidus and is made up of master
musicians who have performed and recorded with a whoʼs who of Latin music including Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cruz, Ray Barretto, and The Buena Vista Social Club, among
others.
In an interview with Nestor Gómez for Barranquillaʼs major newspaper, El Heraldo, Lapidus explained his musical concept: “Many people say that Latin Jazz must have certain characteristics. But I look for ways to put jazz into Latin music rather than making Latin music subordinate to jazz, which is the classic notion of Latin Jazz. I try to present musical situations that can bring folkore and jazz together in a straight-forward
fashion, so that the listener doesnʼt lose the harmonic complexity of jazz.”
Since its inception, Benjamin Lapidus and Sonido Isleño have been busy performing in the U.S. and Latin America, while giving workshops and master classes on Caribbean music at colleges, high schools, and elementary schools around the world, often under
the auspices of Carnegie Hallʼs Neighborhood Concert Series. Unlike other Latin Jazz groups that feature traditional jazz instruments, Sonido Isleño achieves its sound with string instruments and percussion. Their first album, ¿Quién Tiene Ritmo? (1998), was an instant criticsʼ favorite and received solid airplay. El Asunto (1998) won the group more fans around the world and earned a position on many year-end criticsʼ lists. The band performed on CBS – The Morning Show with Bryant Gumbel and Jane Clayson and made numerous radio appearances throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico to promote the record. In August 2000, EMI-Capitol released Real Latin Jazz - Percussion, Piano & Strings, featuring Sonido Isleñoʼs “Jazz Changü..”
This compilation of Latin jazz placed Sonido Isleño in the company of such Grammy award-winning artists such as Chucho Valdés, Eddie Palmieri, Poncho Sánchez, and Giovanni Hidalgo. Tres is the Place (2001) cemented Sonido Isleñoʼs position amongst Latin jazz fans and radio programmers. Many critics named it in their top ten albums of 2001. The band performed in TNNʼs James Bond commercials and performed at various high-profile jazz venues in the U.S. and Europe. In 2004, Blue Tres was hailed by critics as their best album to date and the band performed throughout the U.S. and in Colombia to support it. Blue Tres made 4 top-ten lists for Latin Beat Magazineʼs yearend issue in 2004. 2005 marked the release of Vive Jazz, another album that brought worldwide critical acclaim and performances throughout the country

9PM - The Exposed Blues Duo
Fay Victor (vcl), Anders Nilsson (gtr)
10PM - Shayna Dulberger Quartet
Yoni Kretzmer (sax), Chris Welcome (gtr),
Shayna Dulberger (b), Carlo Costa (dr)
ABOUT THE BANDS:
The Exposed Blues Duo is a collaboration between guitarist Anders Nilsson and Fay Victor that has become an improvising blues duo using true blues, blues based material and all the wails and flails they can muster. With pieces ranging from the Rev. Gary Davis, Leroy Carr, Elmer Snowden, Herbie Nichols and Memphis Slim alongside free improvisation and original tunes. In December 2007 the duo was invited to perform at the Winter Nights festival in Marseille, France run by an improvising collective based there. THE BLUES was the theme that year and this was where the ExPosed Blues Duo was born. The electrifying set the duo performed was thrilling – the packed house wouldn’t go home after four encores! Since then the duo has been performing around New York at venues such as the 55 Bar, The Cake Shop, the Brecht Forum, The Stone, The Local 269 and Barbes. The duo performed in Chicago at the Elastic and the Velvet Lounge in April 2010, turns out not too long before the passing of Chicago stalwart and tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson which in turn has caused the club t close late in 2010. The Exposed Blues Duo’s long awaited debut recording BARE was released in August of 2010 and received rave reviews in the New York Times, Time Out New York and more. The EBD CD release in September of 2010 was a resounding success as well!
The Shayna Dulberger Quartet Based out of New York City, this band performs instrumental music with 1960s Jazz/Post Punk/World influences. Original tunes by Dulberger written for herself (upright bass), Yoni Kretzmer (tenor sax), Chris Welcome (guitar) and Carlo Costa (drums). This band is creatively modern sounding with rowdy as well as tender moments. Shayna has been in the NYC scene since 2004 and is most known for her work with Ras Moshe, Bill Cole and William Parker. “Acoustic bassist, Shayna Dulberger, is another important new musician to watch…” Downtown Music Gallery. “Bassist Shayna Dulberger has become an important presence on the local free-jazz scene.” Time Out New York Shayna Dulberger Quartet

May 24 | Hearts and Bones
Dave Hertzberg’s Hearts & Bones has quickly become one of the most exciting bands to emerge from New York City’s burgeoning neo-bluegrass scene. Combining the earthy, joyous groove of bluegrass with the harmonic sophistication of jazz, Hearts & Bones mines diverse stylistic territory while creating a cohesive, organic sound all its own. The band’s debut album, “Don’t Lose Sight of Your Song,” mixes fiddle-tinged arrangements of classic Paul Simon songs with Hertzberg’s inventive original compositions. Featuring some of the top players from New York’s jazz and bluegrass scenes, Hearts & Bones plays “fiery music that will start your pulse moving….” (David Garland, WNYC)

June 01 | Twins of El Dorado with Travis Laplante
Twins of El Dorado:
Twins of El Dorado is a modern ensemble featuring trumpeter Joe Moffett and vocalist Kristin Slipp. The duo performs settings of its own texts and also explores the music and writings of other artists, from the medieval era to the modern age. By turns
playful, ritualistic, and downright bizarre, Twins of El Dorado unwinds words into musical compositions and improvisations in new and exciting ways. The ensemble has shared stages and/or recorded with such luminaries as Fred Frith, Joe Morris, Ran
Blake, and Zeena Parkins. Together they have performed in various settings, from small library and gallery spaces to acclaimed venues such as The Stone and Issue Project Room in New York and Jordan Hall in Boston.

LAPLANTE BIO
Travis Laplante is a powerful new voice in New York City’s experimental music scene, and has toured extensively with his band Little Women, whose acclaimed full-length debut was recently released on AUM Fidelity Records; with his trio, which features bassist Michael Formanek and drummer Gerald Cleaver; and with under- ground experimental rock bands Extra Life and Skeletons. Laplante has also worked with Anthony Braxton, Mark Dresser, Mat Maneri, Trevor Dunn, and many other luminaries of improvised music.
Laplante’s debut album, ‘Heart Protector’, features original music for solo tenor saxophone. ‘Heart Protector’, the first vinyl release on Skirl Records was recorded by Laplante himself and Ryan Power at the Big Barn in Putney, Vermont. The music itself was largely inspired by the heart protector, Laplante’s term for the pericardial sac that surrounds the heart.”

June 02 | Kotorino
Kotorino
Jeff Morris got together some friends, some family and some people he never met before to make music. Music for people, new music, but music familiar. In this case that happened to inculde Jeff on guitar, pump organ, vocals, his wife Amy on backing vocals, claves and charm, Molly White on vocals and violin, brother Jerome Morris on the batterie required, Caroline on musical saw and luau, Liz Prince on tuba and invasive procedures, Mike on upstanding bass, Stefan Zeniuk on reeds and rites, Jesse Selengut on trumpest, and Nicki Pfoutz on the accodionaire.
Sometimes a show may consist of the full band squeezing onto a tiny stage at the back of a bar —or maybe saw, banjo and violin for the 8th Annual Saw Festival, another time it might be tuba, pump organ and vocals playing for a trapeze review. Its always fun, always interesting.

June 08 | Racing Heart & Saredren Wells
9:00p - Saredren Wells
10:00p - Racing Heart
Bio Racing Heart -
The short version is that Racing Heart play indie folk, but try instead to imagine the earnest yearnings of American golden era pop music, the earthiness of the English folk revival and the searching spirit of contemporary Scandinavian indie rock, and you’ll have a better idea of what the music sounds like. Their debut record To Walk Beside that Ghost (out April 20th on Movemountains) is centered on the soft acoustics of voice, finger-picked guitar, autoharp, upright bass and drums, but embellished and expanded upon by both analogue synthesizers, a string quartet and brass trio. Those ghosts in the album title are the people you’ve loved, the places you’ve lived and the cities you’ve passed through.
Saredren Wells -
Saredren Wells is the pen name for Louisville, KY born artist, musician, and songwriter Andrew Sellers. In 2010 he released his debut album, “Memories are Hunting Horns,” to rare reviews. He currently lives in Brooklyn, New York.

June 09 | Kill Henry Sugar with Maime Minch
9:00p - Maime Minch
10:00p - Kill Henry Sugar
Kill Henry Sugar - Chisel down into the asphalt cacophony of New York, and deep in the bedrock you’ll come upon Kill Henry Sugar. Poised astride the epic timeline of life in the boroughs, Erik Della Penna and Dean Sharenow sketch moody musical portraits with what the Village Voice calls, “Cinematic gravitas.” Their ethic is subtle lines by modest means, employing a signature palette of drums, dobro, and voice to construct petulant yankee poetry—more Serpico than Grapes Of Wrath, more Olmstead than Moses.

(SCROLL DOWN)
Mamie Minch is one of the youngest old-school blues guitarists and singers you’ve heard. She sings and plays songs of her own devising that sound like they’ve been stored in her old National guitar for decades. Raised on the music of John Hurt, Rev. Davis and Memphis Minnie, she can sometimes sound like her predecessors, but don’t mistake her for a revivalist- she is most definitely a product of her own time. Her musicianship and writing are so singular that she establishes her own musical reality, with it’s own stylistic chronology. Minch is also known as one fourth of the Roulette Sisters, and is a member of the group Midnight Hours with Jolie Holland and JC Hopkins. She has shared the stage with Smokey Hormel, Dayna Kurtz, C.W. Stoneking, and lots of other fabulous musical friends.
